Japan rail pass
The Japan rail pass is specifically designed for travellers and can only be booked outside Japan. They are usually available in two classes - Ordinary (standard class) or Green (first class). Japan rail passes are only available to foreign travellers visiting Japan from abroad for sightseeing purposes, travelling under the status of ‘temporary visitor’. You have up to 3 months from date of issue before the pass must be exchanged in Japan for a ticket. Also note at present, the pass does not include travel on the Nozomi-type Shinkansesn (bullet) trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines.

Covering a smaller, more specific area of western Japan, this excursion pass is ideal for exploring the beautiful and historic central area of Japan, this pass covers Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara and Himeji. This pass is available in Ordinary class only and does not include travel on the Shinkansen (bullet) trains. Available for 1, 2, 3 and 4 consecutive days. |

Japan rail west pass - Sanyo![]() |
This pass offers unlimited travel for the larger, more westerly areas of Osaka, Okayama, Hiroshima and Hakata. It is available in ordinary class only and includes travel on Shinkansen (bullet) trains and the Miyajima ferry line in Hiroshima. Available for four and eight consecutive days. |

This pass offers unlimited travel on JR trains (including limited express trains) and most JR buses in Hokkaido on three or five consecutive days. A flexible 4-day pass, valid on any four days within a 10-day period, is available for purchase too. |

The Kyushu Island Railpass is ideal for travelling to places like Nagasaki, Suizenji Park, Kagoshima and Obi Castle. It also includes travel on the new Kyushu Shinkansen train. It is available in ordinary class only and for periods of 3 or 5 days of consecutive travel, starting from your first day of travel. |

This pass covers metropolitan Tokyo and many popular destinations in Eastern Japan including: Nagano, Niigata, Sendai, Morioka, Misawa and Akita. The pass is available in both Green (First Class) or Ordinary (Economy Class), for 5 or 10 days of consecutive travel, starting from your first day of travel or a 4 days in 1 month option. |
